TRANSITION

The Transition Policy of St Cuthbert’s incorporates aspects of the Mission Statement to “recognise and welcome the contribution of everyone and seeks to enable each individual to achieve their potential”, whilst recognising – ‘it takes a whole village to educate a child (Chinese proverb)!’ Our philosophy of inclusion ensures everyone is welcome and focuses on the commitment to recognise and value the unique nature and potential of each individual created in the image and likeness of God.

The following principles underpin the Transition Policy:

Pupils should experience continuity and progression in their teaching and learning – Key Stage 2/Key Stage 3

Partner schools should ensure that the necessary information, transfer and liaison procedures are in place to support the continuity and progression in learning to which the pupils are entitled

Working as a partnership (St Cuthbert’s and all primary schools) to jointly recognise the difficulties and fears which pupils experience on changing schools and work to lessen the impact of them.

Aims of the Transition Policy

Focusing on collaboration the intention is to ensure:

Key people in the partner schools are known to each other and visit each other for liaison and, when appropriate, joint teaching purposes

The transfer of information from primary schools is sufficiently informative enabling pupils to be placed in subject and form groups

All necessary general information is collated and presented in the “Welcome Booklet” which is given to each pupil prior to attending St Cuthbert’s

Data of pupil achievement is shared between partner schools

Continuity in core subjects of Year 6 and Year 7 curricula through dialogue and planning meetings with partner schools

Implement the philosophy of “Every Child Matters” into the policy

Know that Pastoral Managers will continue to work with/support pupils

Make parents aware of the Induction Process, calendar of events and have a named person to contact if they have any enquiries

Parents of Year 6 pupils have the opportunity to meet with the Headteacher and Transition Team to discuss concerns, allay any fears and answer any questions

Promote the gospel values, initiated in the primary schools and support all pupils on their faith journey

Provide every opportunity for an equal start

“The Catholic School is for the human person and of human persons. The person of each individual human being, in his or her material and spiritual needs, is at the heart of Christ’s teaching: this is why the promotion of the human person is the goal of the Catholic School”.

John Paul II
